Flight of the Flame

Image

In wild release, from years of ebony

imprisonment self-formed, a secret flame

like flocks of phoenixes erupts within,

destroying grief and burning out the shame

for just a moment. Racing ‘cross the sea

of me, undone by self-destruction, lost

a moment in the darkness of my sin–

I suddenly am staggered by the cost

and fall beneath the flames, engulfing me

in love beyond all telling, mercy sure.

Though long in coming, let the fire begin

which sings through flying sparks, “You shall endure,

beloved one.” Though darkened still, sweet Love,

Your fragrance calls my soul to rise above.
